Grace & Matt’s elegant wedding brought me back to New York for the fourth time this year—this time to Albany! I had been especially looking forward to their day because it was a Ukrainian Catholic wedding, and I always feel honored to photograph an Eastern Catholic liturgy. From the rich colors and intricate details of their churches to the depth and beauty of the sacred traditions, it’s such a gift to witness the variety and richness of our Catholic faith.
We began the day at River Stone Manor, where Grace got ready in the historic house on the property. Before her wedding, she told me that she was deeply inspired by Jackie Kennedy’s timeless style—and I can say with full confidence that Grace radiated that same poised and graceful elegance throughout the day!
Grace and Matt shared a first look at the venue, and it was seriously the sweetest moment. They exchanged letters with one another before portraits, which made for such a meaningful and relaxed start to the day. I love when couples choose a first look because it allows extra time for portraits and creates such a peaceful flow after the ceremony. (If you’re curious to learn more about first looks, you can read all about them here).
Their ceremony was held at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Grace’s home parish, where her father serves as a deacon. The church itself was breathtaking, filled with vibrant colors, icons, and the beauty of tradition. One of my favorite moments in a Byzantine wedding is the Crowning, when the couple is crowned with wreaths of myrtle. These crowns symbolize the glory and honor with which God crowns them as king and queen of their new domestic church—the little kingdom they will build together in their home.
After the liturgy, the newlyweds were greeted outside the church with cheers and bubbles from their family and friends before we headed back inside for their family photos. On our way to the reception, we stopped at a rose garden for a few more portraits. The evening light was hitting the roses and fountain just perfectly and it felt like a dream!
The reception at River Stone Manor was filled with joy, laughter, and the most beautiful golden light streaming through the huge windows. During dinner, we slipped outside for sunset portraits by the river, and I honestly can’t pick a favorite from these photos!
Grace & Matt, it was such a joy to get to know you both and to be welcomed into your families on this momentous day. Your wedding was filled with faith, beauty, and love, and I feel so grateful to have been the one to capture it all.
Xoxo,
Mary Kate
